What is a vCIO? Does your business need one?

What is a vCIO? Does your business need one?

A Virtual Chief Information Officer, or vCIO performs the same tasks as an in-house CIO, remotely, and at a fraction of the cost. Their role is to oversee the business’s entire IT infrastructure. Think of them as high-level technology expert with extensive knowledge of business systems and processes.

The first step once getting a vCIO on board, is to assess your current systems, hardware and software used, then identify any pain points or opportunities to improve efficiencies within the business. This exercise aims to make sure your business technology needs are being met and to ultimately save you money.

Your vCIO will also be up to date on industry trends and advancements in technology, which can help your business to invest in the right technology at the right time. They will be able to provide strategic guidance on all technology matters.

Small and medium businesses are often a target of cyber security and ransomware attacks. According to the Verizon 2020 Data Breach Investigations Report, Credential theft, social attacks (i.e., phishing and business email compromise) and errors cause the majority of breaches (67% or more). Ransomware now accounts for 27% of Malware incidents, and 18% of organisations blocked at least one piece of ransomware. No business can afford to ignore it.

Under the Notifiable Data Breaches (NDB) scheme, organisations regulated under the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) are required to notify affected individuals and the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC) when a data breach is likely to result in serious harm to individuals whose personal information is involved in the breach. Your vCIO will also be able to ensure any compliance needs are taken care of. This is something that the average small to medium business owner is not aware of.

Employing a full time salaried in-house CIO is often not financially viable for a small business. A virtual CIO is a much more cost effective solution. If you are looking to leverage technology to increase efficiency and decrease expenses, a vCIO could be very beneficial to your business.
